Ukraine is preparing to receive 16 Swedish JAS 39 Gripen E fighter jets under an agreement signed in June. The aircraft are expected to begin operating in the country in early 2029, according to the information provided by Ukraine’s government and Saab details cited in the report.
The Gripen E is a newer version with a redesigned airframe that provides more internal fuel capacity and is powered by a General Electric F414-GE-39E engine. It CAN carry a larger weapons load and be equipped with the Meteor air-to-air missile, which has a range of more than 100 kilometres. The aircraft also features an advanced electronic warfare system.
Ukraine is seeking to strengthen its air defences while awaiting the Gripens. Defence Minister Evgeniy Khmara discussed interceptor supplies and preparations for the aircraft with Sweden’s Defence Minister Pål Jonson in a phone call, the Ukrainian government said.
Khmara said Ukraine urgently needs to improve its ability to counter ballistic threats, particularly by obtaining interceptors for its Patriot systems. Kyiv has proposed that partners provide missiles from their existing reserves in exchange for future deliveries already planned for Ukraine.
The Gripen E aircraft are not the only Swedish fighters expected. Ukraine is also due to receive 16 Gripen C/D aircraft as military assistance, with the first arrivals planned for early 2027.
