Arturo Pérez-Reverte was fined for not wearing a seat belt while travelling in a taxi on the A-6. The writer shared an image of the notice on X and said he had paid the fine immediately. According to the document, the stop took place on November 2 at kilometre 20.9 of the motorway.

Failing to wear a seat belt is a serious offence punishable by a €200 fine, reduced to €100 if paid under the discount system. When a taxi passenger is not wearing a belt, the passenger is responsible for the offence and must pay the fine. Traffic law exempts professional drivers providing a public service from responsibility for passengers’ failure to comply.

The offence does not cost a passenger points. Although seat-belt violations can result in four points being deducted, that penalty applies to the person driving without a belt, not to a passenger.

A taxi driver can remind a passenger that wearing a seat belt is compulsory and that the passenger is liable for a violation. Drivers themselves must now wear a seat belt at all times: an exemption that previously applied to certain professional drivers in urban areas was removed from October 1 under amendments to the General Traffic Regulations. Ambulance drivers providing medical assistance remain an exception.
