Carrying a V16 emergency beacon does not cover every item required in a vehicle in Spain. The country’s General Vehicle Regulations also require passenger cars to have a solution for a puncture, according to Annex XII, approved by Royal Decree 2822/1998.

Drivers can meet this requirement with a full-size spare wheel, a temporary-use spare, or an alternative system for repairing a tyre. An approved repair kit must be capable of sealing a leak and restoring the tyre to the minimum pressure needed to continue on the road. The source notes that such repairs are suitable for damage to the tread, but not to a tyre’s sidewall.

A kit may use liquid sealant with a compressor, or vulcanising plugs with a hand pump or CO₂ inflator. A can of sealant or aerosol on its own is not enough: the equipment must also include a compressor or another means of reinflating the tyre.

Not carrying one of these options may be treated as a minor offence and result in an €80 fine. The penalty could reach €200 if an officer classifies the omission as a serious failure to carry required vehicle equipment. The regulations also list a V16 hazard warning signal and a certified high-visibility vest among the required items.
