The Genesis GV60 Magma reached 60 mph in 3.0 seconds and completed the quarter mile in 11.0 seconds both with and without its simulated Virtual Gear Shift mode, according to testing by Car and Driver. The results indicate that the feature does not slow the electric SUV’s acceleration.
Virtual Gear Shift imitates the feel of an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N offers a similar feature, called N e-Shift, but its acceleration was slower with the mode activated. In the publication’s tests, the Hyundai took 3.5 seconds to reach 60 mph and 11.8 seconds to cover the quarter mile in e-Shift mode, compared with 3.1 seconds and 11.3 seconds respectively without it.
The two vehicles share key hardware, including Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP platform, dual-motor all-wheel drive and an 84-kWh battery. Both can produce up to 641 horsepower, but their simulated-shift modes handle access to performance features differently.
Car and Driver’s explanation is that the GV60 Magma retains its boost and launch-control functions when Virtual Gear Shift is on. The Ioniq 5 N’s N e-Shift mode disables those features, including its N Grin Boost, which reduces its available power and removes the optimized launch.
The Magma also recorded 6.8 seconds to reach 100 mph in both modes. Its ability to deliver the same figures while simulating gear changes contrasts with the Ioniq 5 N, which was quicker in its standard drive mode.
